Exclusive: Demi Lovato Talks Miley Duet, Joe Jonas Split and Feeling ‘More Adult’
Two summers ago, the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock turned then 16-year-old Demi Lovato into a breakout star and ‘tweens the world over fell in love with her character, Mitchie Torres, an everygirl with rock star talent and a pretty cool duet partner (that would be a mulleted Joe Jonas.)
Two years, two pop-rock albums and another Disney movie later, Demi and the JoBros return for the sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, premiering September 3. In an exclusive interview with Celebuzz, Demi, who recently blew out her 18th birthday candles, said both she and Mitchie have grown up.
“She has more confidence now,” Demi told Celebuzz of her character. “In the first movie she was really insecure and she didn’t really know who she was. Now she’s more driven.”
You could say the same about Demi, who is starring in her very own Disney Channel series, Sonny With a Chance, working on an R&B-influenced third studio album, moving her family into a new house (!) and touring with the Jonases, including Joe, 21, who is now her ex-boyfriend. How does she manage to remain friends with him?
“Well, you have to, ‘cause you work with him,” Demi told us. “When you’re hurt, it’s easy to move on, so it was very easy for me to move on.”
Her advice for fans attempting to get along with their exes is pretty simple. “Suck it up,” she said with a laugh.
And so she’s doing just that, even revealing that she has a crush on a well-known R&B star.
“I’m kind of digging Trey Songz – he’s pretty hot,” she divulged. Though she tells Celebuzz there’s nothing romantic happening with the 25-year-old singer-actor, she said, “We followed each other on Twitter and direct message each other…he’s pretty awesome.”
Trey’s soulful vibe could be an indication of what fans will hear on Demi’s new album, which she hopes to release early next year. Expect what she calls a “new sound,” a blend of hip-hop and dance tracks, and even – brace yourselves — possible duets with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.
